Benzoin has a warm, sweet, chocolate-vanilla aroma. It has a calming effect on the nervous and digestive systems, a warming effect on circulation problems and has an affinity with the respiratory system.

Benzoin has been used since antiquity in sweet and soothing aromatic incense. This therapeutic essential oil has an affinity with the respiratory system and is recommended for the fingers and toes in winter to improve circulation. Historically it was used to "cast out” devils whilst today it is used in aromatherapy to change a negative state of mind into a positive one.

The oil comes from a Birch-like tree growing to 20 feet high. The bark, when deliberately cut (worked), produces white sap which turns into a hard, brittle, yellowish-brown resin. The tree grows rapidly but is only "worked" after seven years. Benzoin essential oil is extracted from the resin produced using solvent extraction.
