Cedarwood therapeutic properties have been recognized since antiquity, Cedar was used by all the ancient civilizations in medicine, cosmetics and perfumery, and by the Egyptians in embalming. The wood itself is very aromatic due to the high percentage of essential oil it contains, and was used for building and making storage chests, as the odour repels termites, ants, moths and other harmful insects. In common with other aromatic woods, it was widely used as an incense. It is still used as an incense in Tibet as well as having important uses in traditional Tibetan medicine. Cedarwood also is a powerful antiseptic, used particularly for bronchial and urinary tract infections. It is very effective for cystitis and vaginal infections and discharges. It is mucolytic which makes it doubly useful in treating catarrhal conditions, especially chronic bronchitis.

Cedar's masculine odour make it acceptable to young men and boys. It is used in mens toiletries, especially aftershaves where both the astringent and antiseptic properties and useful, It is used in skincare as a mild astringent, and its antiseptic properties make it valuable in treating acne. It certainly has a tonic and stimulant action on the whole body, while at the same time reducing stress and tension. The essential oil is yellowish, fairly viscous with a warm, woody fragrance. Its active principles include cedrol, cadinene and other sesquiterpenes, and several terpenic hydrocarbons.

Properties: Antiseptic, Astringent, Diuretic, Emollient, Expectorant, Fungicide, Insecticide, Sedative.

Mind: Nervous tension and anxious states benefit greatly by its calming and soothing action. This makes it a valuable aid to meditation. Its reputation for steering strayed individuals back on the path needs to be tested.

Treatment: Tends to be useful for longstanding complaints rather than acute ones. A combined tonic action on the glandular and nervous system helps put the body back into balance, thereby regulating homeostasis. Its main effect however, probably due to its expectorant properties, is on the respiratory tract and may help ease conditions such as bronchitis, coughs and catarrh. Excess phlegm is curbed drying effect. Also of importance to the genito urinary tract, reducing problems such as cystitis particularly where there is burning pain. Has a tonic effect on the kidneys. Could relieve some painful cases of chronic reheumatism and arthritis.

Effect On Skin: Its astringent and antiseptic properties are of greatest benefit to oily skin condition, could help acne. Also helps to clear scabs and pus and chronic conditions such as dermatitis and psoriasis. A good hair tonic and could be effective against seborrhoea of the scalp, dandruff and alopecia. Skin softening properties are apparently enhances when mixed with Cypress and Frankincense.

Well Blend: Blends well with the citrus oils, giving them a base note that very nicely complements with Bergamot, Lemon, Orange Sweet, Grapefruit, Mandarin, Tangerine. Also with Rosemary, Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Benzoin, Cinnamon, Cypress, Frankincense, Jasmine, Juniper, Lavender, Neroli, Rose, Basil and Palmarosa. The note is Middle.
